By Jess Rowe, our High Country writer.
Beechworth is one of those towns where the buildings outclass the brochures. The honey-coloured granite Post Office, the Bank of Victoria, Tanswell’s Hotel — all 1850s–1870s, all still in daily use, all listed. Elm Tree Lodge, at 38 Loch Street, slots into that streetscape as one of the grandest residences of the gold-era town, and since its 2018 renovation it has worked as one of the better self-contained holiday rentals in the High Country.
The house was built in 1875. The front retains the original double-fronted Victorian formal rooms — high ceilings, polished boards, working fireplaces — and the 2018 reno added a modern wing at the rear with open-plan kitchen, lounge and dining, then opened up to the garden with bifold doors. There are 5 bedrooms across the two wings, 3 bathrooms, and a 5–6 person external spa under the elm that gives the place its name. Sleeps 10.
Why people book this house specifically
Most groups we send to Elm Tree fit one of three patterns:
- Two couples who want their own ensuited wings, a shared kitchen for long breakfasts, and a town walk-out front door — Beechworth’s main strip is 400 metres away
- A family of four with grandparents doing a school-holiday week, where the kids get the modern back end and the older generation gets the formal front rooms with the original fireplace
- A milestone birthday or hen’s/buck’s long weekend for ten — the spa, the garden, and the proximity to Bridge Road Brewers, the Beechworth Honey factory and a half-dozen wineries makes for an easy weekend without anyone having to drive
The Beechworth surroundings — what to actually do
The town is 280km north-east of Melbourne, about 3.5 hours by car along the Hume to Wangaratta then up the Snow Road. Locally:
- Beechworth Honey — the factory and tasting room on Ford Street is a fixture; the lavender honey is worth carrying home
- Bridge Road Brewers — craft beer institution in an 1850s coach house, kid-friendly courtyard, the wood-fired pizza is genuinely good
- The Beechworth Historic & Cultural Precinct — courthouse where Ned Kelly was committed for trial, the powder magazine, the old gold-era buildings. National Trust runs guided tours
- Wineries — Rutherglen is 30 minutes away (fortifieds), King Valley 45 minutes south-east (prosecco country)
- Mt Buffalo National Park — 45 minutes south, granite plateau with walks and short ski season at the Cresta Valley in winter
